Vision

Christian Fellowship Church is a Christ centred community dedicated to impacting Belfast, Ireland and the nations with the love of God in the power of the Holy Spirit.

CFC is a group of people from all backgrounds who are walking in God’s grace and are on a journey of transformation with Him. We believe that God has called us to impact our city, our country and the nations with the love of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit. This is the foundation for everything we do.

We are passionate about seeing people growing in their relationship with God and to do this we meet together every Sunday to worship God and to experience a relevant and powerful message, which teaches truths from the Bible and also during the week to further develop and explore God’s truth for us and our world.

Values

  • An emphasis on praise and worship
  • The centrality of prayer and the word of God
  • An obvious ministry of the Holy Spirit
  • Relational Christianity
  • A focus on body ministry and the priesthood of all believers
  • Both men and women can serve at any level of church leadership
  • A heart for evangelism, reaching the lost and planting them into church
  • A world vision with involvement in overseas mission
  • A concern for the poor and disadvantaged and a desire for social justice
  • A prophetic voice to the nation, proclaiming anti-sectarian and non-discriminatory Christianity
  • The unity of believers, regardless of Church affiliation

Beliefs

  • The one true God who lives eternally in three persons – the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
  • The love, grace and sovereignty of God in creating, sustaining, ruling, redeeming and judging the world.
  • The divine inspiration and supreme authority of the old and new testament scriptures, which are the written word of God fully trustworthy for faith and conduct.
  • The dignity of all people, made male and female in God’s image to love, be holy and care for creation, yet corrupted by sin, which incurs divine wrath and judgement.
  • The incarnation of God’s eternal son, the Lord Jesus Christ born of the virgin Mary, truly divine and truly human, yet without sin.
  • The atoning sacrifice of Christ on the cross dying in our place, paying the price of sin and defeating evil, so reconciling us with God.
  • The bodily resurrection of Christ, the first fruit of our resurrection his ascension to the father, and his reign and mediation as the only saviour of the world.
  • The justification of sinners solely by the grace of God through faith in Christ
  • The ministry of God the Holy Spirit, who leads us to repentance, unites us with Christ through new birth, empowers our discipleship and enables our witness.
  • The church, the body of Christ both local and universal, the priesthood of all believers given life by the spirit and endowed with the spirit’s gifts to worship God and proclaim the gospel, promoting justice and love.
  • The personal and visible return of Jesus Christ to fulfill the purposes of God, who will raise all people to judgement, bring eternal life to the redeemed and eternal condemnation to the lost, and establish a new heaven and new earth.

Structure

Elders

CFC is governed and led by a group of Elders who meet regularly to pray, seek God and set vision for the church. The team is led by our Senior Pastor Andrew Gibson.

Advisory Team

The Elders are assisted by an Advisory Team, made up of Stephen Matthew, Donna Jennings and Dr John Andrews. The team have a wealth of experience in working with churches and other Christian organisations over many years, and are available to offer wisdom, support and counsel. The Elders meet with the team annually.

Multisite

We are one church, with 6 congregations, meeting in 5 different locations. Whilst each site has some unique elements and outreach projects, all reflect the same vision and values. The Elders are responsible for all the sites, however, each site has its own Site Pastor and leadership team to carry out that same vision in the particular context in which they find  themselves. We endeavour to bring all the sites together for a number of events throughout the course of the
year. The Senior Leadership, Andrew Gibson, Garath Baxter, Charlotte Curran and Arlene McDowell, oversees all of our sites.

Staff Team

We have a fantastic staff team who are here to love, care, support and equip members across the sites as we seek to become more like Jesus and follow Him where He leads us.

Administration & Communication

Administration

The church General Office is open for enquiries Monday to Friday 9am-5pm. We use a cloud-based software program called ChurchSuite to manage all our member information. Each person can download the app and have access to rotas, their own giving record, communication, events etc. Information on all areas of church life can be found on our website www.thisiscfc.com.

You can contact us at 028 90671838 or info@thisiscfc.com and all staff emails are firstname.surname@thisiscfc.com

Communication

We communicate with our members in a number of ways:
  • Weekly emails - Site Pastor Updates, bereavements and prayer requests.
  • Members’ emails - updates on information relating to church members
  • Website - thisiscfc.com/hub (this is where you will find all key links and
    information)
  • Social Media
  • Podcasts
  • Announcements from front of church
  • Members’ Meetings
  • Finance Meetings

Connect Groups

Connect groups are the way we gather during the week in smaller numbers. Each connect group will look different, but all have the common primary purpose of becoming like Jesus together.

In connect groups we support each other, care for each other, learn from each other, in fact the word for “each other” or “one another” appears many times in the New Testament to describe how we should live in relationship: love each other; share with each other; pray for each other… none of these are possible without others. Community is important because it is where formation takes place.

Ryan Karayiannis is the connect pastor for all of our sites, and walks alongside our site specific connect coordinators. Connect coordinators help develop and equip the groups as well as finding the appropriate group for someone new.

Joining In

When we gather together as a community, we believe that each one of us has an important part to play and without everyone participating we can never be all that God has called us to be.

What you bring is every bit as important as what you take away and there are many spaces and opportunities for you to share the gifts that God has given you and be part of a team.

Some of the opportunities are:

Welcome and Hospitality: It is important to us that everyone feels welcomed and at home as we gather together. From providing a friendly welcome to baking, serving tea & coffee and making connections, being part of our welcome and hospitality team might be for you.

Kids: If you are passionate about introducing kids to Jesus and helping them grow and flourish in a safe, caring environment, join our Kids Team.

Prayer: We believe in a God who answers prayer. We have prayer ministry teams praying for people after each service and run training courses for anyone who would be interested in growing in this area. We also have intercession teams
and groups for anyone with a heart for prayer and breakthrough.

Tech Team: If you have skills or want to learn in Sound, Lighting, Visuals, Videography, Photography or Social Media there is space for you.

Worship: Worship is central to the life of CFC and we have a large worship community. If you feel called to serve in music and worship we’d love to hear from you.

Youth: Disciple and journey with our P7 - Yr14s as they navigate these formative years with worship, teaching, banter and trips away.

Events: Throughout the year we run a number of courses, conferences and events. The team covers all aspects of making them happen from administration, venue preparation and logistics...

This is a fraction of the available opportunities within CFC, to bring who you are and share the gifts that God has given you with our community and beyond, as we come together and impact Belfast, Ireland and the nations with the love of God in the power of the Holy Spirit.

You can register your interest in joining any of our teams when completing a membership application. If you are uncertain how or where you can join in, your site pastor will be more than happy to help.

Giving

Principles Regarding Giving

Money is a big part of life - we work for it, use it and need it every single day. As it is such a big deal, the Bible has lots to say about it. Jesus said that where our treasure is, our heart will be there also. Often, we inadvertently interpret this the wrong way round: we imagine that it’s saying that what we love, we will give money to. However, the reverse is true; what we put our money into is the thing that we will eventually love. Our encouragement, therefore, is that our church members should invest in the kingdom of God. This is not about something we want from people, but something we want for people. We want our members to love, build and experience the kingdom of God, and therefore invite them to put some of their finance towards that end, which leads to the expansion of the gospel through this church and eternal fruit for those who give.

Do we require our members to give?

Tithing - giving 10% of your income to God - is a clear Biblical principle, seen in the life of Abraham, the people of Israel, and even in the words of Jesus. However, we believe that this principle applies slightly differently at different stages of history.

We don’t see tithing as being a New Testament requirement for believers in the same way as it was for Israel in the Old Testament. We still believe that the first 10% of our income should be holy to God, but the requirement is gone, and has now changed to the following: “Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7). It has shifted from being about a legal requirement towards being a free act of generosity.

So, we do not require that members give 10% of their income to CFC, in order to be members. However, we do encourage people to see tithing as a clear Biblical principle that we desire them to follow, and even surpass, when dealing with their money.

Financial Updates

We update our members on the state of our finances each year through two primary means: Finance Meetings and Financial Accounts & Narrative. Our Finance Meetings are an opportunity for members to come and hear from our Elders and Finance team, how giving and expenditures have gone in the past year, and to ask any questions they might have regarding those issues.

The CFC Accounts and Narrative provides a detailed breakdown of our income and expenditure, staff changes, missionary support, ministries and events - and how each of these have used our collective finances to advance the mission of the church in everything we do. Our Annual Accounts are posted on our website each year, alongside our quarterly management accounts, and are available for members to view.

Ways to Give

For full details on how to give please visit our giving page:

Baptism

We believe baptism is a massively important part of Christian life. Whilst we don’t require it for membership, we strongly encourage it for not just members, but every single believer. It is a vital part of our journey with Christ and our identification with him.

We do it because Jesus himself was baptised, and so keeping in line with His example (Mark 1:9) and command (Matt 28:19) we too choose to be baptised.

We hold that baptism is both an act of obedience and also a public declaration. It declares that we belong to Jesus, and that we are united with Him in His death and resurrection by faith. In baptism we bury our old lives and come forth into new life dedicated to Christ Jesus.

We believe in believers’ baptism as opposed to infant baptism. This does not mean that baptism is the way you get saved - which is by faith alone. Rather baptism is the seal of your faith - it is the covenant sign that you now belong to Jesus. If you’ve made a decision to believe, and have not yet done so, we encourage you to be baptised.

We run baptism services multiple times a year alongside a baptism training class which is mandatory for those seeking baptism.

Missions

God has called us to share his love for others both here in Belfast, in Ireland and across the world. We are committed to do this through strategic partnerships, individuals, prayer, practical support, giving and going. Across our sites, we seek to help people find and follow Jesus through various partnerships and CFC initiatives. These include:

At Home

Christians Against Poverty (CAP) - A national debt counselling charity offering people hope and a solution to end the cycle of debt. CFC East run a Debt Centre and our Centre Manager, along with a trained team, offer help and support for those struggling with debt.

  • Food banks – Across our sites, we work with different food banks who serve those struggling in their communities.
  • Red Cross/ HomePlus – Supporting Asylum Seekers and refugees settle into life in Belfast
  • Life House - providing help and support to single teenage mums.
  • Soul Food - providing home made frozen meals for people in need

Ireland & The Nations

Overseas Missions Partners: We have three key partnerships based in India and South East Asia.Through a range of activities such as child sponsorship, developing leaders in the persecuted churches and providing medical care, these partnerships bring hope and have a massive impact on thousands of lives.

Missionaries: Through the years, we have supported and cared for key individuals serving both in Ireland and overseas long term and continue to do so. The work of these missionaries has included teaching, medical training, leadership development, working with refugees and helping people.

Mission teams: Every year a number of teams go from CFC to work with our partners and individuals. We send teams to do practical work, teaching, women’s development, kids and youth work and medical support – whatever the need!

Tobar

Part of our mission here at CFC is to impact Ireland, and one of the ways we aim to do that os through our connection to Tobar. Tobar is a family of Irish Churches, Missional Communities, Houses of Prayer and New Monastic Communities. It is birthed out of a vision to see a fresh apostolic imagination released across Ireland and a desire to see ‘new wells’ dug throughout the land. The churches and communities which are apart of Tobar Family enjoy fruitful gospel partnership, camaraderie in the Spirit and shared missional purpose. The Tobar Leadership Team seeks to strategically identify, train and equip, send and ‘go with,’ pioneers God is raising up and releasing into the missional frontier.

Prayer

When we pray, God, the creator of the universe hears us. Prayer builds the relationship, and helps us bring His kingdom to earth. We want everything that happens in CFC to be birthed out of and steeped in prayer. It is only by this that we will see breakthrough in our lives, families, church, towns, cities and the nations. We want to encourage and support a rhythm of prayer for individuals personally, together as a church, and also opportunities to receive prayer from others.

Avenues for prayer in CFC include:

Prayer Ministry: Prayer Ministry is an opportunity to be ministered to in prayer by a team of trained individuals at the end of every Sunday service.
Prayer Clinic: Prayer Clinic runs once a month and is a safe, confidential environment to receive in depth prayer ministry for healing you may need for spiritual, physical and emotional difficulties.
Prayer Meetings: We run a number of different meetings throughout the year, together as a church family, including two weeks of prayer and fasting, to pray corporately and to seek God. Keep an eye on the church calendar to know what’s ahead. Each site will also have separate prayer events.

Prophecy

We believe in the power of prophecy - that God leads us to share words from Him with the intent to strengthen, encourage and comfort the church. We believe that prophecy is a gift that every believer in the body should eagerly pursue. We want CFC’s culture to be a culture of prophecy that builds up not only our immediate congregation, but the global body as well, through prophetic words and actions.

Avenues for the prophetic include:

Prophetic Team: This is a team that meets regularly to prophetically pray over the church and speak into the life of CFC. We also provide opportunities for training in this area.

Prophetic Appointments: We offer appointments with the prophetic team for prayer and encouragement.

Sunday Services: There is also an opportunity to share a prophetic word from the front of the stage at any of our Sunday services, according to the discernment and discretion of the Service Leader at the time.

Pastoral Care

We aim to provide pastoral support ranging from Connect groups, prayer support, ministry and counselling. The best gift you can give is a healthy you.
Avenues for pastoral care include:

Pastoral Care: If you have an issue that you need some support with, we have a Pastoral Care team that can help you determine the next steps.
Anchor: Anchor is a fully accredited counselling agency with qualified counsellors, who provide a professional service to the community.

Worship

Our chief aim is to glorify God. We believe as we sing and declare who God is, we encounter His presence and are transformed by it. Our CFC Worship Community serve across all our sites on Sundays and at other events. This community involves singers, musicians, sound engineers and visuals teams. Our heart is to lead people into a transformative encounter with the living God through music, songs and creativity. Alongside serving, we meet regularly to refocus, plan and envision. At CFC we have many gifted songwriters and are able to record and release our own songs under CFC Music.

The Meaning of Membership

What changes when you become a member?

Accountability
When you become a member you become accountable to the leadership of CFC, so that you can grow in a safe yet challenging environment that constantly pushes you towards Jesus. You invite the church to speak into your life on issues of faith and practice - not as the ultimate authority (which is Christ through Scripture), but as the secondary authority God has placed over you in this season of your life.

Belonging
We believe that every believer belongs to the family of God, and by definition is part of the ‘church universal’. With that in mind, we believe also that the Bible instructs this belonging to be lived out in the context of a local church. When you become a member, you are making both a public and personal declaration of that belonging - membership demonstrates that you no longer merely attend CFC, you are CFC.

Commitment
When you become a member, you enter a committed relationship with the church. As church leadership and a congregation, we commit to support you every way we can to fulfil God’s purpose for your life. In turn, we also ask for a commitment that members dedicate themselves, firstly to Christ and then to fulfilling the mission and vision of the church He has placed them in.

What we expect from Members

Personal Devotion
We expect each of our members to be growing in their personal walk with God. This includes things like: having a regular prayer life, studying Scripture, endeavouring to separate from sin, being repentant when they do sin, and living a lifestyle of biblical morality.

Participation
Members should be actively involved in church life. This includes things like: prioritising attendance at Sunday services, being part of a Connect group, joining in and serving each other in the church context, sowing financially into the church and praying for the congregation and its leadership.

Outward Focus
Thirdly, we expect our members to be focused on more than just themselves and their church experience, but to also focus on the lost. We ask them to be regularly living, acting and speaking as a witness to those who don’t yet follow Jesus, and to be willing to lay down their preferences for the sake of others.

Marriage, Relationships & Sexuality

The issues around sexuality and relationships are deeply personal and we are committed to consistently walk alongside individuals and couples pastorally in these areas. Our desire is that we both extend and receive grace, recognising that God calls us to live lives that are counter cultural and seek to honour His purposes and plans.

We believe that our individual sexuality is part of God’s creation, that sexual intercourse is a gift of God, and that the acceptable context for expression
of that gift is within a monogamous, heterosexual marriage. Sexual activity outside of this context falls short of God’s design for humanity.

Whilst we do not demand perfection in this area, or indeed in any area of our lives, we do believe that God calls us to courageously turn away from all behaviour which is contrary to his purposes, and to live holy lives by the power of His Spirit and supported relationally and pastorally within His church.

Women in Ministry

We believe that both men and women can serve at any level of church leadership and place no barrier on either gender regarding spiritual authority in a church context. Promotion to places of spiritual leadership within CFC is done on the basis of character, competence and the call of God - not biology. As such, we ask
every member to be willing to submit to the authority of both the men and women God has placed over them in this church.

Forgiveness

It is clear from reading Scripture that unforgiveness is a very serious sin, and as such, we want to ensure that we actively avoid it in CFC. Forgiveness is not
necessarily reconciliation of a relationship, a denial of justice, or pretending that everything is ok. Forgiveness is an acknowledgement that even though what was done was wrong, that things might not be the same after, and that some justice might need to be done, we are going to refuse to hold the person’s sins against them in our hearts. This is based on God’s total forgiveness towards us in Jesus and our confidence that He will right every wrong in the end. We ask all of our church members to avoid unforgiveness at all costs, for their benefit and the benefit of the church as a whole.

Integrity

We do not expect perfection from our church members, and we don’t ask for it. What we do ask for however, is a high level of integrity. This means that when
we fail, we are quick to acknowledge it, we take the initiative in apologising and making it right, and that we endeavour to deal with the roots of any persistent
areas of sin in our lives. We ask members to be open with church leadership about their shortcomings, so that we can support them however we can in their walk towards greater freedom.

Age & Life-Stage

Baby Dedication - Although we don’t do infant baptisms, baby dedications are a regular part of church life here at CFC. This is where the parents commit their baby to God, to raise the child in the context of the local church, and we as a church commit in turn to support both the parents and the child as they do this.
