Hosanna - Ὡσαννὰ
The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,“Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
Matthew 21:9
Hosanna - Ὡσαννὰ
“Hosanna” translated “Save, we pray.”
A cry of celebration, of hope, of expectation…
But what did this crowd expect Jesus to save them from?
And how did they expect this salvation to come?
Perhaps no-one except the man on the colt expected this week to end with a cross, a crown of thorns and a final breath.
Soon their hope would lie dead in a tomb and all their expectations would turn to ash in their hands.
Yet amidst their disappointment Jesus was exceeding expectation, saving them in ways they dare not believe possible, preparing an eternal salvation that could not be shaken or taken.
Personal Reflection
As you journey Holy Week can you sit with a trusted friend and name your disappointments, your unmet expectations?
Perhaps together you can carry them in prayer to the feet of the one who died to exceed our expectation amidst our disappointment.
