“Then the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills— to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of crafts.”
Exodus 31:1-5 NIV
A few years ago I had the opportunity to go snorkelling at the Great Barrier Reef. What amazed me was not the fish swimming all around us, but the magnificence of the coral. It was like an underwater forest of vibrant colours. I felt I had been transported to another world. It is only relatively recently that people have been able to see and explore such wonders, so it struck me that for thousands of years the only eyes to have enjoyed it all was the one who created it.
God revels in beauty and wherever there is ugliness and barrenness we can see the work of the enemy. It therefore should come as no surprise that when God designed a place for His people to meet with Him as they journeyed through the wilderness, that it would be a place of beauty.
Not only that, but He gifted and filled people with His Holy Spirit to create what He had designed. We are image bearers and so we carry that same creative force and appreciation of beauty. These are not optional extras but they feed our souls and spirits. Let’s not define them too narrowly, or consign them to people we deem to be “artistic”, we all have the potential to create beauty.
