Exodus 22

One comment on “Exodus 22”

  1. What strikes me today is that the judges were to rule as God’s delegated authority: that was God’s choice for the Israelites. They were going to stand out as different. Later, however, they demand a king so that they are like the nations round about them. Samuel is upset about this, and God tells him that he shouldn’t take it personally, that actually the people don’t want God as their King. He warns them what it will look like in reality, but they insist, and God instructs Samuel to get them a king. (1 Sam 9)

How much do we want to fit in with the world around us? Yet God has called us, as He called the Israelites, to be distinctive. Sometimes that has a heavy cost like being prepared to stand up and speak up when something ungodly is happening, and not putting what people think about us above what God thinks. In a world that in its power structures and popular opinion demonstrates less and less honour of God, that will cost us. Am I prepared to pay that cost? For some in our world it has meant imprisonment and often death: in our Western world the cost might look different, but there will be a cost to being disciples of Jesus, the true Judge of all. May God give us grace to stand in days of trouble!
