Exodus 14

Exodus 14 Devotional

And Moses said to the people, ‘Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today.’ Exodus 14:13

If you are anything like me, the last thing you want to do in a difficult situation is to stand still. You can only imagine what the Israelites felt when the Egyptians were marching after them with nowhere to turn. Stand still and see. We are so active, even when we don’t think we are doing anything, our minds are on the go. Could you just pause right now and take a few deep breaths?

Amidst the battle in Psalm 46 we hear the well-known words ‘Be still, and know that I am God’. Know God and you will see yourself as He sees you.

So many are in battles, battles to do with health, in relationships, in work situations and especially battles of the mind. For many there seems no way out and yet He asks us to trust Him. Psalm 77:19 ‘Your path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters, though your footsteps were not seen’. Often we do not see God in action but He is ALWAYS with us.

God didn’t just free the Israelites from slavery. He wanted to free them from the Egyptians and the lies of a false religion. He reminds them that He is the one God and He has the power to control everything. Are we listening to voices (including our own) other than His voice?

In verse 16 Moses, a type of Christ, a deliverer, stretches out his hands over the sea and the people cross over. We are asked to do the same, to stretch out our hands in surrender, there will always be a way through.

Exodus 14:14 ‘For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall NEVER see again NO MORE FOREVER. The Lord will fight for you and you shall hold your peace.’

May you be still and know the God of the Red Sea today.

  1. Wow! Do I REALLY believe that my God is this mightyGod? I think I often make Him tame (as if I could!). He UTTERLY destroyed the enemies that were pursuing the Israelites. They just had to be still and move when Moses told them to, as God conveyed his instructions through him. Nothing else.
God speaks DIRECTLY to us,his children, today. I am challenged reading this chapter to stop and be still when enemies come (within and without) and to listen and EXPECT some instruction from the Holy Spirit, my teacher and guide. God actually told Moses to stop crying out, and to tell the people to move on, and that he, Moses, was to raise his staff to part the sea. The mighty power is God’s alone but He allows mere human beings to work with Him. I want to learn to do that.

That was a timely word for me in the devotion this evening about being still, thank you, Helen. A great song too!
