Exodus 13 - Consecration of the Firstborn

  1. Experiencing the wilderness was necessary in order for the Israelites to get where God was leading them, but I think having hope when wandering isn’t easy. In Exodus 13, God shows us a practical way to have hope in tough times: Remember His past faithfulness and know that He always makes good on His word.
Let’s be a people/church that Takes God at his word.

  2. “This ceremony will be like a mark branded on your hand or your forehead. It is a reminder that the power of the Lord’s mighty hand brought us out of Egypt.””

The Passover celebration was to mark the Hebrew people out as God’s very own, to remind them of their great deliverance by the Lord. I think it’s interesting it’s described “like a mark branded” on them. That makes me think of how slaves were branded with their master’s mark. So they were called out of Egypt to be, as it were, slaves to a new Master: God himself. This God would be there with His Presence day and night.

There’s a parallel here, isn’t there, of how we too, delivered by Jesus the Messiah out of slavery to sin and death are called to enslave ourselves to Him. I think of Paul, the apostle, describing himself as a slave to Christ. We are not our own, we were bought with a price (the blood of Jesus) and now that we are His we are called to listen to Him and do what He says. It’s a high calling, a privilege, and He has put His Spirit in us, and He’s not going to leave us, day or night. Amazing!
