It really is all about God

Key Verse

Exodus 20:3

“You shall have no other gods before me”

Central truth: Put God first in everything – it is the best way to live.

In Exodus 19 God gives Moses the 10 Commandments which have stood the test of time from generation to generation up to present day.

Exodus 20 v 2 and 3 “I am the Lord your God who brought you out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.”

It is liberating to know there is only one true God to worship.

The Israelites had just come out of Egypt, a land of many idols and many gods. Multiple gods were worshipped to enhance the possibility of multiple blessings. But God emphasises to them that they must have no other gods but Him. It wasn’t enough just to give lip service to Him, they needed to live with Him as their only God and to acknowledge that it was He who had led them out of Egypt to be His people.

By making this the first commandment He wanted them to realise that this was central to everything else in life. The commandments are followed by laws which would help the Israelites to live in a righteous way. They needed to learn that every action has consequences.

Similarly in our modern lives, we can allow other stuff to get in the way of giving God the central place in our lives. Our need for money, recognition, material things and even the acclaim that our ‘ministry’ can offer, can all become like gods to us when we depend on them and allow them to affirm us. If we keep God in the central spot in our lives then everything else will be aligned to Him.

In Matthew 23 v 13-39 Jesus warns the religious leaders against religiosity and self righteousness.

Relationship...not rules.

The Laws themselves had become the most important thing and He was pointing this out.

We will all fall short of living as God wants us to, but if we become hung up on trying to keep every rule, every regulation and every law we will miss out on being able to accept the forgiveness, grace and mercy which our loving Father shows us.

Proverbs 7 v 1-5 tells us to keep Gods commands “......written on the tablet of your heart”.

Consider:

Do we believe that the Commandments are still applicable to today?

Do these Commandments and Laws enhance our lives or hinder it?
