A benefit of hindsight – celebration!

Key Verse

Exodus 12:14

“Remember this day and celebrate it....”

Main Content

Central truth: For God, remembering is an important part of the salvation of His people.

Exodus 12:14-51 tell us about Gods rescue of a nation suffering under the most appalling conditions of slavery and oppression. God in His wisdom and mercy asked the Egyptians to let Israel go time after time, but they refused.

Finally He allowed death to sweep the land. The people of Israel where passed over and God told them to remember that day. The Passover is still remembered and celebrated to this day (April 6-14 2012). From dealing with a nation, down to dealing with individuals, God did not exclude anyone from His mercy, provided they obeyed His statutes and commands.

The Passover was not just a one off event at the start of a new journey, but a moment to be revisited, to remind the people of Israel of God’s releasing hand and to move into a fresh revelation of their freedom. The holy days and the feasts of the Christian calendar help individuals and nations do the same today.

In the New Testament Israel’s enemy would not be visited by death but by life. In Matthew 20: 29-34 we read about Jesus entering Jerusalem, being honoured, His anger in the courts of the temple, and His touch of healing love for a blind man. We see God incarnate, move among His nation, His people, the individuals of the crowd and saying “if you believe, you will receive whatever you ask in prayer”.

Consider:

It is said that hindsight is a wonderful thing, but do you only see what went wrong? What about using hindsight today to see where you did well and give thanks to God who desires to bring blessing and life.

Take a moment to remember your “Passover” experiences and give thanks to God who has saved you from death through His provision of the ultimate ‘Passover lamb’ – His Son Jesus.

Hi, I’m Simon Lapping, a long term member of CFC. My Journey in Faith began on 30th April 1979 when I bought a copy of the New International Version of the Bible and I’m still using it as my map for the journey. I’m married to Sharon, 20 years in September 2012. We have two wonderful daughters, Jill and Hannah. I love the outdoors, sailing, kayaking, cycling, camping and hill walking, but the old bones prefer it in the height of summer now rather than all year round. The creative arts are very important to me and I love to see people express themselves using God’s creative gift to them.
