Habitat for Humanity, Northern Ireland
Habitat for Humanity is a non-denominational Christian movement that has a vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live. CFCs Peter Farquharson is the organisation’s Executive Director in Northern Ireland.
Since it was established in 1976, Habitat has built more than 350,000 houses worldwide and provided simple, decent and affordable shelter for more than 1.75 million people. Locally, its work is focused on community regeneration and reconciliation - building houses that build hope.
Since the 1990's, for example, 15,000 volunteers from across Northern Ireland have built 90 houses in eight communities in Belfast, Downpatrick and Omagh through Habitat’s self-build home ownership projects.
“The impact of each project is far greater than the projects themselves, as they also bring people together,” Peter explained. “It is the same overseas, as we are a key partner in global mission raising funds to support international projects and sending volunteer teams to work alongside families in some of the world's poorest and most vulnerable communities.
“In 2009, for example, almost 200 volunteers - our biggest team ever - went to Romania and built 10 family homes in a week. It was an amazing time and there’s much more to be done.”
